F.T Steerwood: an introduction

In my collection of motoring memorabilia I have several car magazines, including some Dutch magazines called “De Auto”, dating from the late 1920s and early thirties. These publications have always fascinated me because of their colourful front covers. Looking better I noticed that all these covers bore the signature of the same man: F.T. Steerwood.

Frederick Thomas (Fred) Steerwood was an English artist well known for his watercolours of motor cars. He painted all kinds of cars, but a lot of his work was done for motor manufacturers. Much of his art work was used on the front covers of motoring magazines, like “The Motor Owner”, “The Autocar”, but also other magazines like “Country Life”.

Steerwood_engines_14Apart from motor cars Fred Steerwood produced many other works of art with different motoring subjects. He did some of the artwork in a children’s book called “The Big Book of Engines”.

On the next pages several of Steerwood’s works are shown, but there must be many more, as in the 1920s Fred Steerwood was a very prolific artist.

After World War II the art work of Steerwood changed. No more automobiles, but mostly landscapes.
